Beethoven-Jahr

Haldern Pop Diary – Day 12

28 March 2020

Beethoven Year

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) had developed a campaign for the ITB tourism fair in Berlin for the Beethoven Year 2020. Tourist hotspots where music can be experienced in NRW. The Haldern Pop Bar has been selected for the campaign as one of the 7 “music venues” and is in the illustrious company of Bonn’s Beethoven House, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Augustusburg Palace, the Tonhalle in Düsseldorf and the Balver Cave in the Sauerland. We are of course delighted by the attentive view into the province and the constantly growing appreciation of our work here in Haldern on the Lower Rhine. The ITB fair fell victim to the virus, but fortunately this story still exists online:

www.dein-nrw.de/musikland

“In 2020, in addition to the events dedicated to Beethoven, we want to give a stage to the many other top-class music events and venues in NRW. Because we are convinced that NRW is a real land of music, there are concerts and festivals for every taste”, explains Dr. Heike Döll-König, Managing Director of Tourismus NRW.

It does us good to feel the perception of public institutions, especially in these times, and that their attention is not always caught in urban regions. Interestingly enough, these stories have a completely different “currency” than when the musical director of the Glastonbury Festival praises our festival.

Last week I had a longer conversation with a friend from Switzerland, “duex”, who runs a bar and a very special festival in Düdingen, between the cities of Bern and Fribourg. “Bad Bonn” the club, “Kilbi” his festival. An exuberant laboratory of pop culture, where people light up and experiment and something always blows up in your face. Without any false bottom, hardly any place of the present felt as intensely as this one. In the future it will be more and more about these places and their understanding of culture. Endure and keep going, but never run after something. The people who are doing this, i.e. booking, performing and listening, they live for and are making these places. Their spirit strengthens and inspires these places, whether on, in front of or behind the stage. Often it is the people and not the infrastructure that keep these milieus together and exciting.

Our confirmation today is a great pleasure for us, their NPR Tiny Desk Concert has absorbed us: Tank And The Bangas
